Have you noticed that the library might not have older editions of magazines and newspapers in the library? It doesn't mean that you can't find the article you need! Instead of keeping (and storing) hundreds or thousands of magazines on the shelves, the articles are available to you through the New Hampshire statewide subscription to EBSCO and Newsbank.

In the future look for Ebsco on the left side bar of this website under 'Links' to access the following databases.

Unique Doll Collection on Display

Stop in to see a collection of over 100 character dolls on loan from the United Federation of Doll Clubs. Each doll is accompanied by a themed storybook. The display has traveled throughout New England since 1999.

There are favorites such as “Aladdin”, “Little Men”, “Curious George”, and even “Harry Potter” along with historical figures such as Amos Fortune, Amelia Earhart, Nelson Mandela, and Betsy Ross.

You may also view the journal included and written by ‘spokesbear LL Bear’ who has recorded the experiences of the dolls as they have visited various libraries.

The large collection will be on display until the end of September.

This special program features live reptiles. More than 24 animals will be demonstrated during this fun filled event. The participants will meet all sorts of interesting lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs and even an American alligator or too! Everyone will enjoy meeting “Luke,” an 11 ft. long albino Burmese Python, “DarthGator” and “Rocky and Toby,” huge tortoises. Mysterious and colorful creatures such as Chinese water dragons, bluetongued Skinks will be here and so many more animals from different parts of the world. Games, prizes and Awards are presented at this party. Our favorite ice cream truck will be coming for those who've participated in the Summer Reading Program!

When Cuba Was Lost by Phil Jones

The Frost Free Library now owns the debut novella of Phil Jones.

Based on a true story as told to Phil this is a fascinating snapshot of a pivotal time in Cuba. The scene opens in 1935 during the leadership of Army Chief of Staff Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar, who effectively controlled the presidency and was closely aligned with and supported by the United States. Jones has done his homework and is well acquainted with Cuban history at this period along with its culture.

A thinking young U.S. woman about to step into adulthood visits Cuba with her parents and is befriended by a Cuban family with a daughter her own age. She is allowed to stay for an extended period while continuing her education there. While at a party she meets someone who will change her life, and through this relationship unwittingly becomes involved in crucial events about to unfold. The groundwork is solidly laid in the first few chapters, and then the pace picks up steadily and continues until its exciting climax. Along with villains, there are old world heroes with integrity and values rarely seen in today’s entertainment media. You’ll find yourself lingering in thoughts about this book after its satisfying conclusion. Phil Jones is an intelligent, sensitive, author who bears watching for future works.

Long-time Humanities to Go presenter Jere Daniell, Professor Emeritus of History at Dartmouth College, is offering a new program through Humanities to Go on New Hampshire Towns and the Civil War. This lecture focuses on the home front, not the fighting. Professor Daniell will describe both formal town actions and non-governmental community responses. Specific topics include rewarding men who enlisted; helping citizens avoid military service; ostracizing war opponents; organizing aid societies; celebrating military victories; and post war memorialization. Whenever possible Professor Daniell will illustrate his general observations with examples drawn from the history of the town in which he’s speaking

In attendance: Kathleen Ash, Rufus Frost, Lisa Seelen, John Northcott, Gina Paight, Bernie Collins, Teresa Horne and Pastor Marilyn Ayer. Also in attendance as an invited guest was Wayne Crowell, Trustee of Trust Funds for the Town of Marlborough.

Chairperson Bernie Collins called the meeting to order at 8:35 a.m.

Secretary’s Minutes It was noted that in the January minutes the MacDonald donation should read $200, not $250. Motion to accept the minutes from January 8, 2011 as amended was made by John Northcott and seconded by Rufus Frost. Vote to accept was unanimous.

Treasurer’s Report, presented by Gina Paight, was as follows.
o Checking Account Balance is $573.68.
o Elizabeth Richards Concert Fund Balance is $528.22.
o Special Gift Fund Balance is $3,509.88.

Motion to accept treasurer’s report was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by John Northcott. Vote to accept was unanimous.

New Business

Secretary’s Minutes Motion to accept the minutes from December 4, 2010 as presented by Gina Paight was made by John Northcott and seconded by Lisa Seelen. Vote to accept was unanimous.

Treasurer’s Report, presented by Gina Paight, was as follows.
o Checking Account Balance is $515.68.
o Elizabeth Richards Concert Fund Balance is $528.10.

Director’s Report given by Kathleen Ash
o The trustees gratefully acknowledge donations from two sources: $500 from Molly and Sinan Badrawy for computer tables and $250 from the MacDonalds toward the music program for preschoolers.
o There was discussion about the needed repairs for the furnace. The heat exchanger will not be installed until Friday; therefore the library will have to be closed until next Saturday. The part is under warranty; however the cost to ship it and the labor cost will come to about $2000 for all the work that needs to be done on the furnace. It was decided that all the staff should still be paid during the time the library is closed.

Board of Trustees Meeting Minutes

December 4, 2010.

Frost Free Library, Marlborough, NH

In attendance: Rufus Frost, John Northcott, Gina Paight, Bernard Collins, Teresa Horn, Pastor Marilyn Ayer and Kathleen Ash.

Chairman Bernard Collins called the meeting to order at 8:45 a.m.

Secretary’s Report: Gina Paight moved to accept the minutes from the October and November meetings as presented by Secretary Marilyn Ayer. Seconded by John Northcott. Vote was unanimous.

Treasurer’s Report: Gina Paight presented the Treasurer’s Report for November banking activity. Rufus Frost moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented, seconded by John Northcott. Vote was unanimous.

Director’s Report: Kathleen Ash reviewed her monthly report with the trustees. Due to recent computer virus issues, the library needs to purchase an alternate virus protection program. Also, problems with the library’s IP address were discussed. To rectify the IP address situation, the library must purchase a static IP from Time Warner Cable. The annual cost is $360 with an installation fee of $25. Kathleen reported that she has contacted Rick Van Wickler of Cameleon Consulting of New England in regards to his Management of Aggressive Behavior presentation. The trustees discussed possible locations for the presentation and reasonable fees to charge those who attend. Rufus Frost recommended holding the presentation in late March to avoid weather issues. As previously approved, Katheen will proceed with the purchase of two computers—one from the 2010 town budget funds and one from the Special Gift Fund. The revised 2011 budget will be submitted to the Selectmen’s Office next week. Gina Paight moved to accept the Director’s Report as printed. Seconded by Rufus Frost. Vote was unanimous.

Maintenance Committee: Rufus Frost reported that he has instructed Cheshire Fence to repair the iron piping in the library fence. He also recommended that the ductwork insulating be done in 2011. The Board agreed.

Old Business: John Northcott asked about the purchase of the brochure rack. Kathleen Ash reported that she plans to purchase the Lucite rack.

The next meeting is scheduled for January 8, 2011.

John Northcott moved to adjourn at 9:40 a.m., seconded by Rufus Frost. Vote was unanimous.

Secretary’s Minutes

It was noted that on the September minutes a correction should be made. John Northcott was responsible for the sign and not Rufus Frost. Motion to accept the correction was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by Teresa Horne. Vote to accept was unanimous.

The October minutes were not available.

Treasurer’s Report, presented by Gina Paight, was as follows.

o Checking Account Balance is $390.58.

o Elizabeth Richards Concert Fund Balance is $527.88.

o Special Gift Fund Balance is $2,298.12.

Motion to accept treasurer’s report was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by John Northcott. Vote to accept was unanimous.

Director’s Report given by Kathleen Ash with the special note as follows:

Kathleen Ash’s mother donated material with which Phyllis Goedecke made new chair cushions for the library chairs. The result is wonderful. Motion was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by Gina Paight to give $25 gift certificates to the Olive Garden to each of the women as a way of saying thank you to them. Vote to accept was unanimous.

Motion to accept Director’s report was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by Gina Paight. Vote to accept report was unanimous.

Maintenance Report presented by Rufus Frost, was discussed, especially the following points:

Rufus can get heavier gauge railing for the fence for $121; to install it will cost another $250. Motion to install rails using 2010 funds was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by John Northcott. Vote to accept the motion was unanimous.

Old Business

The budget: Motion to buy one computer with extra funds in this year’s budget and an additional computer with money from the Special Gifts Fund was made by Gina Paight and seconded by Rufus Frost. Vote to accept the motion was unanimous.
Motion to earmark $4100 of anticipated income in next year’s budget to insulate ductwork was made by Gina Paight and seconded by Rufus Frost. Vote to accept the motion was unanimous.

New Business

We gratefully accept the donation to be used for materials, from Corinne Bennett in memory of Bob Bennett.
Mary Frost presented a conceptual plan for renewal of the garden areas around the library. John Northcott moved acceptance of this plan and Teresa Horne seconded. Rufus Frost abstained from voting. For all the others on the board the vote to accept the motion was unanimous.

The next meeting is scheduled for December 4, 2010.

The meeting was held at John Northcott’s home. Bernard Collins called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

Secretary’s Minutes Motion to accept the minutes from September 25, 2010, as presented by Marilyn Ayer was made by Rufus Frost and seconded by Teresa Horne. Vote to accept was unanimous.

Treasurer’s Report, presented by Gina Paight, was the same as the previous month. There was no need to make any motion.

Director’s Report given by Kathleen Ash

In talking about Cynthia Brewster giving her notice, Kathleen expressed interest in stepping down out of the director’s position. We expressed that we would miss her in this position and Cynthia in her leaving; there must be a way to satisfy all needs. Different possibilities were discussed.
In regard to the brochure rack, John Northcott moved to let Kathleen choose what she feels will work best, with funds up to $300 plus shipping and handling, and Gina Paight seconded. Vote to accept the motion was unanimous.

Motion to accept Director’s report was made by Marilyn Ayer and seconded by Gina Paight. Vote to accept report was unanimous.

Maintenance Report presented by Rufus Frost, was discussed, especially the following points:

Fence railing: Leon _?__ looked at our needs and said that standard railing is about six inches too short for our fence. Cheshire Fencing may have the longer pipe we need. Rufus will follow up on this. Paying for Leon’s services can come out of the grounds-keeping line of the budget, as there was less mowing this year.
We will ask the town to order a new flag to replace our worn-out one. We still need to replace the rope.

Old Business

In regard to ductwork insulation, which will cost about $4000-$4100, Rufus spoke to Marge Shepardson about the possibility of grants and learned that the grants are loans.

The next meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2010.

CALL TO ORDER/MINUTES
The meeting was called to order at 8:45. There were no minutes from the previous meeting.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Director Kathleen Ash presented her written report. Noted items are:
• John Northcott is awaiting a response from Antrium’s CEO from two weeks
ago come Monday. He wrote to her concerning probable lack of initial
computer support.
• Kathleen will be at Marlborough School June 11 to present the 2010 Summer Reading Program to the students.
• Another yearly contest is scheduled with Troy’s library to see which has the
greatest circulation during an established period. Troy won by about 450 in
2009. Kathleen pointed out that Troy has many more DVDs than Frost Free
Library, and that this year only books will be used for consideration.
Rufus Frost moved to accept the director’s report. John Northcott seconded the motion. Motion passed

TREASURER’S REPORT
Treasurer Gina Paight presented her written report. No issues were addressed. John Northcott moved for approval. Rufus Frost seconded the motion. Motion passed

COMMITTEE REPORTS
BUILDING AND GROUNDS
Rufus Frost reported that, as previously discussed, wrapping the duct work to increase heating efficiency in the building was going to cost $4,000.00, maybe $4,100.00. Trustee consensus is that this improvement should be pursued as funding becomes available.

Kathleen said that the door leading upstairs was locked, and could not be opened. Consensus is that there is no need for a lock on that door. Bernie will pick up a new doorknob.
Kathleen noted that some of the fence pipes in the granite posts had fallen out. Apparently, the railing receptors in the posts are too large. Rufus said that he’ll check on repair options.
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
Kathleen needs information on Summer Concerts for the newsletter. Bernie will contact committee members about the schedule.

OLD BUSINESS
AREA LIBRARIES’ TRUSTEES MEETING
Bernie Collins said that Adel Knight, had phoned about a week before area library trustees were to meet. She asked to have the meeting at Frost Free Library on Thursday, April 22.
Representatives from Troy, Dublin, Antrim, & Peterborough, met and were welcomed by Rufus Frost. He shared history of his great grandfather’s gift of this library to the Town of Marlborough, excerpts from some of his letters, and interesting parts of the charter.
Troy will be hosting Terri Knowles from the attorney general’s office at a meeting of city officials and library trustees in a few weeks. The meeting should be open to everyone. Some members of this board are interested in attending. Information on time and place to be forwarded

LIBRARY TRUSTEES AND FRIENDS MEETING, PORTSMOUTH
Teresa Horne said that the Library Trustees and Friends meeting in Portsmouth was worth attending. Terri Knowles’ section on finance, trustee responsibilities and general fiduciary information was a highlight.

The next meeting will be on Saturday June 12, 2010, 8:30 am. Unless otherwise notified, the meeting will be held at Rufus’ house, 79 Frost Hill Rd. May’s meeting adjourned at 9:30.
